Bergen is well known as being a very rainy city
so we were
delighted with the sunshine when we arrived this
time.
My husband, Kjell, and I had plenty of time
to walk to and from the market place in
the warm
Norwegian sun before rain arrived in mid-afternoon.
This image was taken from Deck 10 of Splendour
of the Seas.
We were standing on the dockside
looking at a group of NATO ships
when we saw what appeared to be a wedding
party rowing into the heart of Bergen.
We immediately went onboard Splendour to
Deck 10 to
watch the grand entrance these
modern Vikings were making into downtown Bergen.
Late morning, we began our walk into the market
area of Bergen.
Splendour was docked near the vehicle ferry
entrance.
At this angle it almost appeared we could hook
her up to
the back of an RV and drive away with her.
Bergen is what we call a "ship shot" port.
Not every
docking or anchoring arrangement provides an angle
to take good images of the ship, but the walk along
Bergen's
shoreline provides excellent image opportunities.
We were in town on a Saturday so the harbor
was full of pleasure craft.
I noticed last year when we were here that even
the
traffic control dividers have a Viking ship shape.
The boat that had been rowed past us earlier was
tied up in the heart of town.
Ah, yes, the market. You will note this photo
report
has a strong emphasis on food. :-)
If you like fresh seafood, this is the place to
shop.
The redness of the photo is not an accident.
These shops are under red tents that provide the
red glow.
Caviar, anyone?
In addition to food, there is much more to buy.
Whoops, food again.... :-)
Trolls, trolls, and more trolls.
We purchased and immediately ate the freshest,
sweetest jordbær (strawberries) we've
had since
we were in Norway last summer.
We headed back around the harbor filled with
all types of pleasure craft
and could see our favorite pleasure craft
waiting patiently for us.
Seagulls waiting for a meal here
are fat and sassy.
Last year while in Bergen we had dinner at this
restaurant so we worked our way through the
crowd to return for something cool to drink.
This little fellow with sun glasses is "livin'
the good
life" with an ice cream in one hand and a toy in
the other.
As we passed, we eyed the goodies once again.
We would return later to buy shrimp to take
back to the ship.
When we were in this restaurant last year, it was
raining,
so we had a totally different impression without
sunshine
flowing through the sky lights. The place
this time was
so much more bright and cheery.
We chose a table outside
where we could watch
the people and watercraft.
People at the next table jokingly made an attempt
to get into
the two previous photos so I made this fellow the
center
of this one. :-) Note the crow's nest
on the mast of the
sailboat just behind his head - an early version
of a Viking
Crown Lounge, room for six, standing room only.
:-)
A cool drink finished, we moved back toward
the market to make our purchase of fresh shrimp.
The people aboard this sailboat pulled in just
long
enough for another couple to board.
What a gorgeous day it was to be out sailing!
Before you purchase items at an open market, shop
around to compare merchandise and price.
In Norway, the shrimp are cooked onboard the
fishing boat before it reaches shore.
We purchased a kilo of shrimp to take back to the
ship
and eat with Norwegian mayonnaise and bread.
This fresh shrimp had not been frozen,
then thawed as some at the market had been.
It is worth the penger.
Do you need a white reindeer pelt?
If so, there are plenty here.
Shrimp in hand, we started back toward Splendour.
And, there at the other end of the dock our favorite
lady
of the high seas was waiting for us.
