Hi dearest Lois, I am resting up for my next cruise on the Majesty in February. I wanted to send my sincere gratitude for the special little starfish you gifted me with. He always brings a smile to my face and my 3 year old grandaughter said "he is soooo adorable"! She did however decide she should have him for a sleep-over, hahahaha.
Cant wait to see both of you again real soon.
Chris

Your pictures are wonderful.. You are such a beautiful couple..

I came across your site looking for Family info. I was wanting to know if we might be related. I am the great grand daughter of Lauren Evensen (1897-1970) Wife Florance(1900- 1991) from Racine Wis. Greald P.Evensen was my grandfather and Gary G Evensen was my father. If we are related I would love to get any family info you may have.

Hello Brenda,

Thank you for your kind words. No, I don't believe we are related, at least not by any recent connection. I hope you will be able to find your family connections.

Very best,

Lois

Just one thing without real earth shattering importance, but still an eyesore to the people in the know. The name of the longest fjord in Norway is Sogne Fjord, not Songe Fjord.
I see you have this incorrect spelling a number of places.
A great new year to you!

Thanks for the input, Stein.  I've made corrections and appreciate your help in getting it right.  :)

Subject: Villefranche

I just returned from a European vacation 2 days ago. Flew into Milan and with my husband drove west yo Nice but happened to (luckily) find ville Franche. I was so impressed. We only had 1 day there and stayed in a small hotel overloking the water. I am thrilled to find your website as we also travel the world. Was wondering if you could recmmend a small, clean hotel boutique style within walking distance of the sea and shopping areas, markets etc in Ville Franche. I am taking my daughter either December or March and would like to walk to restaurants, beach, shopping instead of driving. Also, is the Nice airport the best to fly into and can you make any suggestions on other sites in the area? Thank You so much for such a wonderful website!!!!!!!!! Hope to hear from you soon. Vikki

Hi Vikki,

Yes, Villefranche is fantastic.  Since our usual visits to Villefranche are by ship, our hotel experience is limited. We have found the Welcome Hotel to be quite nice, though.

There are plenty of things to see and do within walking distance of the Welcome Hotel.  If you are interested in seeing Monaco, you can take a public bus for a day trip from Villefranche.

Thank you for your kind comments about my web pages.  :)

Very best,

Lois

I have taken several pictures there over the span of thirty-plus years, and I NEVER get tired of coming there and getting to see the mill in operation---I would have loved to see it in it's "best days" hen the people of the countryside still came there to get their supply of ground meal and flour done while they waited---and now the GOVERNMENT won't let you all sell it cause there aren't screens on the windows and whatever othe excuses they gave--- I still buty the meal whenvere I DO come and still love to use it to cook with and "pretend" that I am living in the middle of Cades Cove in the dan Lawson place and living the way God entended us to---the natural way!!!Thank uou all for the wonderful photos and keeping the place "alive" !!! I am 55 years old and disabled and may not get to visit many more times, but I sure have alot of wonderful memories of the Mill and God Bless ya'll for keeping it open. Mrs. Lydia Simpson

Thanks for your noteon the discussion page --- I always feel privledged when I hear from you. We'll do our best to get a quick review and hopefully some pictures to the site as soon as possible. I travel for work for three weeks when we return - so it may not be real timely.

I think the last note we exchanged related to Captain Per Kjonso. We were just on the Enchantment mid-April as he celebrated being Master of that ship for 8 years. The way RCCL is rotating captains these days - that's special.

He's our favorite --- and as my additions to the calendar may indicate, I purposely scheduled our cruises so we'd be with him on the Enchantment when we do our 50th RCCL cruise.

Safe have happy travels to you and your husband.

Warm regards -
Libby

Hello, Libby,

Hello

I have read your internet pages with great interest, and spend some time looking on all your pictures. I have been a passenger on some of these ships, and i will sail from Miami 06 may on a transatlantic cruise with Voyager. One couple we are travelling together with ( I am from Drammen, just 50 min north of Toensberg ) are very anxious about the weather en route across the atlantic. His father was a captain with Bergenske, but he never travelled with his father, be cause he bacame seasick, his brother went on several trips with his father's ships in the late 50's and early 60's. I really liked the Splendour ( mediterranean cruise 2004 ) and also Jewel.

Loved your pictures of France. My husbank and I rented a Villa in the south of France in October 05 and loved the area. This year we are off to The Netherlands and Germany. We've also toured most of Italy and love the Amalfi area, but France stole my heart! I see you are from Cincinnati. Our son attended BG, got his masters from Tiffan, and now works for the state. He lives in Bellefontaine at the present, originally from PA. I look forward to seeing your pics from other areas. We have photo albums filled with memories, it's the only thing we truly take with us when we leave here, our memories!

Hello Cheryl,

Yes, we love the South of France, too. And, I surely agree with you about the images that we bring home from our travels are our best souvenirs. I just mentioned to my husband yesterday that the images seem more beautiful the longer it has been since we have been to an area. We are both avid photographers and are decorating our home with images from our travels.

On a cold day in Cincinnati, it's fun to look at a picture of a sunny day in Villefranche; on a very hot day in Cincinnati, it's fun to see images and remember the cool fjords on a summer day in Norway.

Thank you for writing,

Lois Evensen

Hei!
Takk for fine bilder!

Hello,

I have a strange question. Do you by chance have any photos of Lima, Norway? It is a small but beautiful village not far from Stavanger. I believe Algaard may be the postal area.

I'm asking because I will be visiting my Norwegian relatives in July and wanted to show some photos to some friends here in the states. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything on the Internet.

Interesting that you are in Cincinnati. I grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio!

I'll have to look more closely at your web page. The photos are beautiful!

Thank you for any help you can offer.
Janie

Hello Janie:

No, we don't happen to have any images of Lima, Norway. A complete listing of the pages and images we have on line is on our Quick Reference/Archives page.

Have a wonderful trip!

Subject: Evensen Family Reunion

what a nice site! i found this site by accident after i had typed in the name of my brother, Thomas Evensen, in Yahoo. my brother died last year and i miss him a lot so i just thought that i would see what was out there. our father was born in norway in 1904 and after sailing all over the world he decided to settle in canada. my mother was a dane and they had ten kids together. i am no. 9 and Thomas was no. 10. in 1967 canada made change out of silver for the last time and switched to nickel or whatever they use now. my brother and my father (Ingwald Martinius Venheim) decided that they would save up all the pre 1968 coins that they could and then sell them for the silver and build or buy a boat and sail back to norway. pappa was killed by a drunk driver in 1970 so that never happened. Thomas grew up and had a family and got split up and started a business and all was going well. he felt that he needed to honour our father's centennial in 2004 by getting a boat and sailing to norway where he had never been. the boat was lost in a storm off the coast of iceland and Thomas died in the cold water. the only crew was my son Kristian Carlo, known as K.C. (casey). he put on his survival suit , but for some unknown reason Thomas did not quite get the time. i miss him so much and it was very nice to find this site and get to see a family of Evensens enjoying life together. good luck to you all. far vel

Hei!

They turn out very very well and clear. I was wondering what camera most of the pics were taken with? I am trying to find a camera that will give me good clear picures like the one's that you all have posted. Thanks for your time.

Subject: Messina, Sicily

Thankyou very much for pictures of Messina Sicily, I was there in 1981 and its exactly what I had seen, I was born in Sicily a beautifull town of Montagnareale Province of Messina, the other city close to Messina is Patti di Marina and then Montagnareale, also where the famaous ceramic makers of Montagnareale close by between Patti Di Marina and Montagnareale is the place of its famous ceramica di Cavalliere Callava family, I hope my spelling is correct and its Olive oil also-pasta once was shipped from here to NewYork -many stories , many Kingdoms.

Patti di Marina where once King Roger's mother lived and then was barried 1100th century I believe-

Montagnareale , is a town of 3000 people over looking Patti di Marina and once was uynder Norman rule, French, Spanish and many more of the Sicilian melting pot of 3000yrs.

Thanks for bringing Messina on Web site from your family, I hope this is the image that people view of Sicilians, not the negative over whelming media towards us-

Thanks again and great more adventures, Sincerely, Nick Pizzo form Ottawa Canada-

Grazie!

Dear Evensens...

I came across your site by accident while searching for something...I don't even remember what...after I got so involved with your excellent travelogue and gazetter.

Just wanted to say thanks for a job very well done, including amazing photos. The only thing missing...unless I missed it, would be some indication of the type of camera, lenses and film (if applicable) that you were using a various times. But, short of that personal observation, the work on you site is not only excellent, but very professional.

Thanks for a great time!

Hi Lois,
Really enjoyed your site, while in the USNavy,I'm retired now but in 1966 my ship had the pleasure of pulling liberty in Villefranche while the homeported ship was at sea. The town didn't want two Navy ships in at the same time, kept down trouble. My question is Have you ever seen a USNavy ship there in any of your visits. I really don't expect an answer because I'm sure you're much to busy, again thanks for the pictures, brought back a lot of memeries to this old Navyman. V/respectfully Gary Whitfield OS1 USN Ret. Hi Gary:

Thanks for your note.  No, we haven't seen any US Navy ships in Villefranche during our many visit there, but we we have seen them in other ports such as Malta and Naples.

I have gone through a good portion of it and I was very impressed with your presentation and your photography.  You have done a wonderful job of this site.  I have recommended that a few of my consultants browse your site and see what actually can be done with a little thought.

You have given me some great ideas on how I can present pictures of my Cruise adventures, for my clients to view.  Thanks.........

I just returned from an 18 day trip with Grand Circle Tours - the Orient Lines Marco Polo ship.  Our cruise started in Copenhagen and we then went to Flam, Norway, Gudvangen, Hellesylt, Geiranger, Bergen, Oslo, Aarhus, back to Copenhagen, then Tallinn, Estonia, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and Stockholm.  I found your site from Google, looking for more information on Flam.  I really enjoyed the time there - took the railway and then by bus saw all the beautiful waterfalls and other scenery.  It was breathtaking at the highest point looking down at our cruiseship below.  Your pictures of Flam brought it all back.  I wish I had your expertise to put my trip online for friends and family.  I made the trip with a friend from Charleston - I live in Durango, CO.  We are both 75 and lost our husbands within a few months of each other.  A couple of years ago we were at a high school reunion in Durant, Oklahoma where we were both raised and "cooked up" the idea of a cruise together.  My husband and I traveled independently most of the time: he driving, I navigating.  I lost him 2 1/2 years ago and so far I'm not brave enough to launch out on my own traveling.  I am going with another friend to UK Lake District and Scotland in Sept.  We will be based in Windermere and take tours from there the first two weeks and then the last two we will join a Globus tour for Scotland.  I hope it will be fun. I have been through all the same area with my husband but wanted to visit it again - so beautiful.   For a place I HAVEN'T been, I have Portugal and Spain on my list and wonder if I could do that independently, driving with a friend.

Thank you for your site, I enjoyed it and it is very well done.

Hello Mary Lou:

Thank you so very much for your kind comments.   Our favorite travel souvenirs are the images we bring home.  It is fun to be able to share them on the Internet with others who have the same interests.

We wish you very enjoyable and safe travels in the future!

I'm working on the web site www.ussrankin.com, a site for everyone associated with the USS Rankin, a former Navy ship that is now a fishing reef.

We're doing a Ports of Call section now, and you've been to several of the places that Rankin has also been to.

I'm wondering if it's OK to link to your sites from ours. I'm also wondering if you plan to leave your photos on the site indefinitely, if you plan to take them down after a few months, or what?

I think your photos would bring back a lot of nice memories for people who visited those places aboard Rankin back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Regards,
Lou Sander

Hi Lou:

You are more than welcome to link to the various pages on www.evensens.us.  The site has been on line since 1994 and is contiuously updated.  It is a work in progress and there is no plan to remove any of the port information.

I've taken a look at your site and am quite impressed.  :))

Very best to you and for your project,

Lois

Hello Loise and Kjell, found your web pages on the net and I just want to drop a line and send my regards from Norway. I hope everything is good and I actually miss all the good (bad?) discussions we had even if our humor is very different.
Have a great day.

Dear Evensen Family!

Greetings from Germany! Your website is quite interesting. I found your site because I was searching for "Evensen related websites" on the web. You know, I am living in a very small village called "Evensen" here in Germany (about 120 Citizens, near the Expo 2000 city "Hannover"). You are invited to visit our website http://www.evensen.de but I think you cannot read german language. But you will find some nice pictures of Evensen.

I was never in the United States. However, I own a Ford Explorer which is a quite rare car here - so I am feeling a little american here ;-)

Kind Regards,
Hans-Georg

Hello Hans-Georg:

It is so nice to hear from you!  Thank you for writing.  I have enjoyed looking at your web site.  It is surely a small world.

We also have a Ford Explorer in the family.  It's a great vehicle.

Thank you for writing!

So Lois, how are you and Kjell getting along?

Bobbie and I are off on another cruise, to Hawaii this time. We leave on Sunday, July 28th aboard the Norwegian Star, but first we are spending two days at the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel. It's our 60th wedding anniversary and Bobbie's 78th birthday. I don't know if you can send messages ship to ship, but if you can it would be special if you could send greeting to Bobbie on her birthday and condolences on her 60th wedding anniversary. Or if you're on shore, maybe a card to her:

I am sorting papers and found one with "ONSIDIUM" written on it. I think that is the family name of the orchid I gave you.

How is life down under? I hope it is better than here, we have rain, wind ,low temperatures and darkness as main components if I should discribe ours. So I will not.

We spend a nice week traveling in Portugal and Spain before we went home. We visited my relatives in Malaga and the whole area are just exploding in developments. I have never seen anything like it. You must take a rid when we pass by next time.

I have to start cooking, Anita just arrived.

can you give me any info?  we are inspecting the costa ships and they are putting us up at a hotel near the port, where ever that is.

thanks for any assistance you can give.

Hi Sue:

The ships are docked near the train station if you can find that on a map of Venice.  I've seen the Costa ships docked across from RCCL ships there.

Have a good trip!  :-)

Have just found your web page while doing research on Royal Caribbean Cruises, with hopes of cruising to Hawaii in September. Love the looks of your home. The Spring garden, in particular, got my attention and I was delighted when I opened it and saw all the irises and roses. The dew on the roses is so magnificently captured that I read the comments and have noted the type of digital camera you use. Thanks for an enjoyable site.

Just stopped by to check out your personal site, Lois.  I haven't been there in a while and wanted to see "what's new."  As always, an enjoyable visit!  (Love the pictures of the Grandkids.  Our Danny is expecting a little brother in November!)  I've just completed an 8-week class in Web Development (back in college again - a Junior now), so I'm noticing things at your site I'd not have noticed before.  I also understand how you got "hooked" on improving and enlarging your site.  :)  Hope you and yours are well.  We're booked on Norway's Farewell Voyage in September - will be time soon to plan our next cruise.  We thought we'd be back on RCCL this year, until we heard Norway was relocating to the Orient. So, maybe next year will be an RCCL year!

Your pictures are all beautiful - am planning to buy a digital camera    and would really like to know what brand is best--or better yet, what do you and your husband use? (if you don't mind)  I use a still camera, it is ok but I would like to start working with my computer more so a digital is next. I am excited about your website - I came across it unexpectedly and enjoy it so much-  I have posted my review on the Radiance of the Seas, maiden voyage. I also love RCI and would like to continue traveling on the different ships.  Thanks -  your website is the best!!
Carol

Hi Carol:

Thank you for your kind comments about our images.  My husband and I both use Sony digital cameras.  Although less than two years old and I love it dearly, the model I use is no longer made.  My husband's is a Sony DSC-S70.  Each has slightly different features.  Important features for us are:  zoom (as much as possible and we both use it regularly), storage capacity (mine uses a floppy disk, my husband's uses a memory stick), exposure time (my husband can set his for longer exposure times to get fantastic night images), etc.  New models are coming out so quickly that it's best to research them on the Internet, then play with them in the store before making a decision about which camera to buy.

My husband and I drove over to Metamora, Indiana, yesterday and each took quite a few images that I have published here for our family and friends.

Very best,

Lois
